PSYCH 127A Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Null Hypothesis, Biopsychosocial Model, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Null hypothesis - hypothesis may be false. Assumed to be true until contradicted by systematic data. A person who proposes a new theory or treatment should be able to prove claims with scientific evidence. Scientists who make new predictions/hypotheses must prove it to be true. Null hypothesis - alternative to experimental hypothesis. Predicts that the experimental hypothesis is not true. Do not need to prove that the hypothesis is false because the null holds until rejected. Clinicians should demonstrate scientifically that their treatments are both effective and harmless. As medical students learn about new illnesses, they often "develop" symptoms of each successive disease they study. Many symptoms of emotional disorders are expressed in everyday experiences. Biological, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral and humanistic approaches. Humanistic - behavior is a product of free will. Systems theory - integrate different contributions to abnormal behavior. Holism - whole is more than the sum of its parts.
