Document Summary

Concept 8. 1: an organism"s metabolism transforms matter and energy subject to the laws of thermodynamics. Metabolism: the totality of an organism"s chemical reactions. Organization of the chemistry of life into metabolic pathways. Metabolic pathway: beings with a specific molecule, which is then altered, Catabolic pathways: breakdown pathways, release energy (cellular respiration) Anabolic pathways: build molecules, consume energy or biosynthetic pathways (synthesis of amino acids) Bioenergetics: the study of how energy flows through living organisms. Heat(thermal energy): associated with the random movement of atoms or molecules. Potential energy: energy that matter possesses because of its location or structure. Chemical energy: potential energy available for release in a chemical reaction. Thermodynamics: the study of energy transformation that occur in a collection of matter. First law of thermodynamics: energy can be transferred and transformed, but it cannot be created or destroyed. Entropy: a measure of disorder or randomness. More randomly arranged a collection of matter is, the greater the entropy.
