Document Summary

Without speciation, the planet would be inhabited by a single kind of general adapted organism after natural selection. Evol is as much about speciation, the engine that generates biodiversity, as it is abou adaptation, the result of natural selection. Whole pt of darwinian revolution is that species are not fixed. Species are reproductively isolated from other species. Can graph certain characteristics and see how they cluster. Those dots that cluster together are a species. Can now also look at genomes and compare them as well; would give the same result. Distance b/t the indiv dots in a cluster shows variation w/in species themselves. Whether or not 2 individ are member so of the same species is a reflection of ability (or inability) to exchange genetic material by producing fertile offspring. Represents closed gene pool w/ alleles being shared among members of that species and not usually others. Therefore, species become extinct and species give rise to other new ones.
