Raw data is a term used for numbers and category labels that have been collected but have not yet been processed in any way. Variable: a characteristic that can differ from one individual to the next. Ex. height, fastest speed, a letter of choice. Ex. a person, in a study. ( may also be called an observation) Sample size: the total number of observational units. (the letter n is used to represent it) Data set: the complete set of raw data, for al observational units and variables in a survey or experiment. Census: data are collected from all members of a population. Sample data are collected when measurements are taken from a subset of population. Population data are collected when all individuals in a population are measured. It"s generally important to to determine whether raw data are sample data or population data. Statistic: a summary computed from sample data. Parameter: summary measure using data for an entire population.
