Document Summary

Agent = anything that can be viewed as perceiving its environment through sensors and acting upon that environment through actuators. Percept = the agent"s perceptual inputs at any given instant. Percept sequence = an agent"s complete history of everything the agent has ever perceived. Agent"s choice of depends only on what"s in the percept sequence. Agent function = mapping a percept sequence to an action. Agent program = implementation of the agent function. Rational agent = an agent that does the correct thing. Performance measure = an evaluation of any given sequence of environment states. Designed according to what one actually wants in the environment, rather than according to how one thinks the agent should behave. Performance measure that defines the criterion of success. Rational agent should select an action that is expected to maximize its performance measure, given the evidence provided by the percept sequence and whatever built-in knowledge the agent has.
