• Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): establishes minimum
wage, overtime pay, record-keeping requirements,
and child labor standards
o How the federal government regulates wages and
hours
o Also sets wage, hours worked, and safety
requirements for minors
• Sets 14 years old as the minimum age for
employment; limits # of hours worked by
minors under the age of 16
o Internship programs under the FLSA
• The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification
(WARN) Act: requires employers to provide notice of
plant closings and mass layoffs
o Notice must be given in writing and be delivered
at least 60 days prior to closing a work site or
conducting mass layoffs
• Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA): signed by Bill
Clinton; provides eligible employees who work for
covered employers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid
leave during any 12 month period if one or more of
the following events occur:
o Birth and care of a newborn child of the employee
o Placement with employee of a son/daughter for
adoption or foster care
