The way children process, interpret, and think about the world around them as they pass through a series of stages in their cognitive development. Concrete, visual appearances that dominate a child"s interpretation of and reaction to the world; They are not able to comprehend what is real or fantasy and believe what they see without further understanding. Ex: (ages 2-7) children being terrified of the witch in the wizard of oz. Understanding a situation or problem by identifying patterns or connections; problem solving. Logical and coherent thinking; understanding that concepts can have multiple meanings. Ex: (ages 7+) children being terrified of the possibility of kidnapping or a nuclear holocaust occurring. Emotions are produced by events considered as real, and their intensity of emotion corresponds to the degree to which this is the case.
