ANT 318L Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Auditory Cortex, Visual Cortex, Vestibular System
Document Summary
Lacrimal glands located above the eye release lacrimal secretion onto the eyes (tears: produce a constant stream of secretion, tears are spread downward and enter the lacrimal sac which drains into the nasal cavities. Lacrimal secretion contains antibodies and lysosome: both are antibacterial and protect the eye from infection. The cornea: the cornea is the outermost layer of the eye, provides protection while being completely transparent, provides the greatest amount of refraction of all eye structures, unable to alter this refraction. The iris: the iris controls the amount of light that flows through the pupil, a pair of muscles can constrict of dilate the pupil, protects the photoreceptors cells from overexposure, responds to emotional state via the pns. The retina: the retina is the innermost layer of the eye, the neural layer contains millions of photoreceptor cells broken up into two categories, rods are low-light, black-and-white resolution, cones are high resolution-color.
