Document Summary

Viruses are not cells and they do not carry out some of the cellular functions we have talked about this semester. Viruses do infect cells and they are able to co-opt many cellular processes in order to reproduce. This lecture serves as a bridge between our cell biology and biotechnology units. Pierce 9. 3 (introduction, rna viruses, hiv, influenza, not covering gene mapping using phages) Viruses have certain features in common, but they also differ in ways that allow them to be classified (and to function differently). Compare and contrast viruses based on their composition. Some types of cancer (and genital warts) are caused by hpv infection. Retroviruses that insert into the genome can also contribute to cancer. Explain how a retrovirus could contribute to cancer. The influenza virus is an rna virus, but not a retrovirus. You can get a vaccine against influenza infection, but you usually have to get a new vaccination every year.
