This superstition exists even today. ( i am a virgo, i believe). Physiognomy attempted to assign personality characteristics by facial features. The most famous one is the humoral theory of temperament that phlegm, yellow bile, black bile and blood cause personality. 1700s christian thomasius devised a very modern way of measuring personality: by assigning numerical score to various traits of character.
