Document Summary

A chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that is characterised by acute episodes of reversible airway obstruction and muscle hyper-reactivity. Inflammation (too much mucous is formed and plugs your airways) (the bronchioles constrict and close up) (the bronchial walls swell) More male children (15. 38%) have asthma than female children (10. 78%) More female adults (10. 8%) have asthma than males adults (10. 8%) More common in indigenous populations (1. 9 x more common) Smoking mothers raise the risk of their children getting asthma. Breast feeding children lowers the risk of children getting asthma. The goblet cells are part of the pseudo- stratified ciliated columnar epithelium. Below the mucosa layer is the submucosa which has glands that also secrete mucus. Below this is the muscularis layer which is made of smooth muscle and cartilage. Below this is the adventitia which is connective tissue. Is made of cuboidal epithelium not pseudo-stratified ciliated columnar epithelium. Has no cartilage and is only made of smooth muscle cells.
