Document Summary

Metabolism and exercise physiology (5 marks: describe the factors that affect metabolism and basal metabolic rate. Bmr represents minimum resting energy expenditure of an awake, alert person; determined by thyroid hormone level. Thyroid hormone, gh, insulin, adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol all increase bmr: thyroid hormone most important; daily regulator: summarise the main metabolic processes in the production of atp. Catabolism: break down of organic molecules; releases energy and provides energy molecules for glycolysis and atp synthesis. Adenosine triphosphate (atp) is produced through aerobic metabolism in the mitochondria and glycolysis in the cytoplasm: aerobic metabolism provides 95% of the atp demands of a resting cell. In this process the mitochondria absorb oxygen, adp, phosphate ions and organic substrates (such as pyruvate) from the surrounding cytoplasm. The body adapts to changing energy demands by: Altering the rate of atp produced: exercise intensity. Altering the amount of atp produced: exercise duration.
