Human Dignity:
- Treating someone like an object is not respecting their dignity.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
- Is not a law, rather than a guideline.
- Created by representatives from many countries.
- Eventually created based off the French version.
- Is a milestone document in the history of the human rights.
- Proclaimed 10th December 1948 in Paris by the United Nations
What is a right?
- Something everyone is entitled to regardless.
- Right to education
- Right to freedom and safety
- Respecting of dignity and privacy
- Right to be understood and understand
- Right to participate
- Right to live peacefully
- Rights to affordable healthcare
- Right to be treated equally
- Rights to anti-discrimination
What is being human?

- To be human is to hold a number of tensions together
o The tension between being and becoming is a basic structure of human
existence
o The human being already exists as someone, buy at the same time she or he
is always on the way to becoming someone
o i.e. Mala la wanted girls to go to school in a community where this as’t
allowed. A local gang shot her on a school bus, but she survived.
o After she recovered, she kept campaigning.
o The tension was the right to education, racial and political.
Human Dignity:
- Some understandings of human dignity are based on the belief that it is something
humans already possess.
How can we acquire or lose dignity?
- Through feelings of self-worth (or lack or self-worth)
- Through certain dignity-bestowing (or dignity removing) behaviours
