1. What distinguishes a professional from a non-professional role?
- You don’t need a degree to be a professional e.g. enrolled nurse
- The professional body will have standards and a code of ethics as
part of the standards.
- Someone who is required to uphold the highest (exemplary) standard
of ethical conduct- higher than the ordinary person in the street
- Someone who will abide by professional codes of ethics/professional
conduct/professional standards
- Someone who has a special obligation to recognise and ameliorate
patient vulnerability
- Someone who is recognised with AHPRA and or with a professional
council/body which has the power to grant/deny registration
- A person’s registration status is available to the public online at
AHPRA.gov
- Nursing and midwifery board of AUS of the PBA are examples of
national boards which exist to keep the public safe.
2. Name some restrictions on entry into a health care profession by AHPRA
- Criminal record and Police check
- Health check including immunisations
- Completed an accredited program of training
- Currency of practice
3. Why do we have these restrictions?
- Professional behaviour prescribed by national boards cause no
harm, protect public, protect professionalism, protect self
Voluntary notifications against hcp’s made for the following reasons
a) Failure to meet expected standards of knowledge, skill, care or
judgment in professional practice (e.g. lacking in clinical competence)
b) Thought not to be ‘a suitable person’ to be a member of a health
profession e.g. lacking in integrity
c) Thought to have an impairment e.g. suffering from a substance
addiction
d) Found to have falsely obtained professional/ student registration
