Motivation
What is Motivation?
• The drive to increase/improve the level, direction and persistence of effort expended
at work
• A reward is an outcome of positive value to the individual and can be used to
motivate workers:
- Extrinsic rewards are given to someone by another individual
- Intrinsic rewards are self-administered
• Content theories of motivation help us understand human needs
• Process theories:
- Offer additional insights into how people give meaning to rewards
- Add to managers understanding of individual differences
• Reinforcement theory of motivation focusses attention on the environment as a
major source of rewards
• Needs:
- The unfulfilled psychological desires of an individual
- Everyone has needs
- Needs can cause tensions that influence attitude
• Weaknesses with Motivation:
- Theories are based on individual motives
- Motivation is easily lost
- If a copay does ot ork to otiate their eployees the they o’t get
much work completed by the workers
Equity theory of motivation:
• Personal rewards are compared with others rewards
• The reward can then be either equitable or inequitable
