Blood supply of the lower leg
8.1 Identify and describe general areas of supply of arteries supplying the lower limb:
abdominal aorta
-supplies abdominal cavity
common iliac arteries
-just to left side of body of L4 where abdominal aorta divides
into two arteries
external iliac arteries
-supplies to lower limb
internal iliac arteries
-supplies viscera and walls of pelvis
obturator
-supplies blood to pelvis, biggest branch of internal iliac artery
femoral
-continuation of external iliac artery
-gives off branches to lat. iliac and gluteal region
profunda femoris (deep femoral)
-largest branch of femoral artery
-supplies gluteal region, hip joint, quadriceps and knee joint
popliteal
-Branches to adductor magnus and hamstrings
-ends by dividing into ant. and post. tibial arteries at tibial
tuberosity
anterior tibial
-crosses over the top of the interosseus membrane
-supplies the anterior compartment
-continues into dorsal aspect of foot
-ends to become dorsal pedis artery
posterior tibial
-supplies the posterior compartment
-continues into plantar aspect of foot
peroneal
-supplies the lateral compartment
dorsalis pedis
8.2 State the structural significance of the arrangement of lower limb veins into deep and
superficial veins
Deep veins:
-run with, and take the names of the arteries e.g. popliteal veins with popliteal artery
-same pattern as the arteries
-vena commitantes
-contain valves
Superficial veins:
-in the skin, therefore not often seen on the specimens
-valves (not as many as deep veins)
-anastomose (communicate) freely with the deep veins
-best identified in the surface anatomy catalogues
Significance:
-two ways to return blood to the heart, some in-built redundancy
-temperature control

Document Summary

8. 1 identify and describe general areas of supply of arteries supplying the lower limb: abdominal aorta. Supplies abdominal cavity: common iliac arteries. Just to left side of body of l4 where abdominal aorta divides into two arteries: external iliac arteries. Supplies to lower limb: internal iliac arteries. Supplies viscera and walls of pelvis: obturator. Supplies blood to pelvis, biggest branch of internal iliac artery: femoral. Gives off branches to lat. iliac and gluteal region: profunda femoris (deep femoral) Supplies gluteal region, hip joint, quadriceps and knee joint: popliteal. Ends by dividing into ant. and post. tibial arteries at tibial tuberosity: anterior tibial. Crosses over the top of the interosseus membrane. Ends to become dorsal pedis artery: posterior tibial. Continues into plantar aspect of foot: peroneal. Supplies the lateral compartment: dorsalis pedis. 8. 2 state the structural signi cance of the arrangement of lower limb veins into deep and super cial veins.
