PHTY102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Good Clinical Practice, Physical Therapy, Tacit Knowledge
Reflective Practice in Physiotherapy
•Define reflective practice
•Describe the use of reflective practice in physiotherapy
•Outline the benefits of reflective practice
•Describe the types of reflective practice
•Identify how to develop the practice of reflection
What is reflective practice?
•Reflection is a process through which the individual considers and learns from their experiences
•Process of reviewing an thinking critically
•Self-awareness of own knowledge and skills in combination with present circumstances to allow
new understanding
•The process of challenging “taken for granted” assumptions
•Recognising that reflections change perceptions- often adopt a new interpretation
•Moving out of your comfort zone!
Reasons for reflecting:
•Reflection is an important means of learning about attitudes, experiences and self
•It provides information that promotes improved performance
•It provides health professionals with awareness about their individual abilities & limitations
•Leads to focus on improving skills, emotional control which facilitates person-centered practice
•Provides understanding that increases self-control, self-honesty, self-awareness, self-
acceptance, self-respect
•Professional standards and credentialing processes to demonstrate continuing competence for
most health professionals now require demonstrations of reflection or reflective practice eg
annual registration (AHPRA)
What is reflective practice in physiotherapy?
•The critical analysis of everyday working practice in order to improve competence and promote
professional development
•This process is contingent on the acknowledgement that professional action may contain errors
•The detection of such errors is important if professional/ethical objectives are to be achieved
•Examining critically the assumptions underlying our actions
•Consideration of the impact of our actions
•Identifying what passes as good clinical practice
Reflective practice in Physiotherapy:
The Physiotherapist:
•Learns from practice experience
•Examines conception of knowledge
•Thinks about context of practice
•Explores assumptions in practice
•Becomes aware of theories in practice
•Develops a plan
Reflection should provide insight into:
•How decisions are made based on patient information, knowledge, skills and clinical experience
•Problem-solving strategies
•How different decisions were or could have been considered
Reflective practice:
Enhances:
•Development of “professional thinking”- deliberation, rational thinking, clinical thinking
•Development of “professional knowing”- the expertise

Document Summary
Re ective practice in physiotherapy: de ne re ective practice, describe the use of re ective practice in physiotherapy, outline the bene ts of re ective practice, describe the types of re ective practice, identify how to develop the practice of re ection. The physiotherapist: learns from practice experience, examines conception of knowledge, thinks about context of practice, explores assumptions in practice, becomes aware of theories in practice, develops a plan. Re ection should provide insight into: how decisions are made based on patient information, knowledge, skills and clinical experience, problem-solving strategies, how different decisions were or could have been considered. Enhances: development of professional thinking - deliberation, rational thinking, clinical thinking, development of professional knowing - the expertise. Promotes: ability to respond to health care situations in light of previous patient cases (tacit knowledge) and previous knowledge, the development of illness scripts and clinical knowledge. Links: re ection and higher order cognitive processes.
