Spinal cord injuries: complete and incomplete, quadriplegia, tetraplegia, paraplegia, motor and sensory changes corresponding to the level of the lesion. Neurological impairments: these can be congenital, acquired, peripheral or central, and commonly consist of, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, sci(cid:859)s, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, brachial plexus injuries, polio. Locomotor impairments: most commonly, but not limited to athletes with amputations these can be: unilateral or bilateral, bk, tk, ak or be, te, ae. Includes athletes with impaired prom (arthrogryposis or joint fusions: short stature- achrondroplasia, limb deficiency- dysmelia or amputation, difference in limb length. Important to empty the bladder before exercising hydration before, during and after exercise. Athletes with amputations: the energy cost of ambulation is greater for amputees than for non- amputees, thermoregulation is affected. Increased level of amputation = increased metabolic demand. Athletes with neurological impairments: the energy cost of ambulation is greater if the lower limbs are affected, fatigue, thermoregulation can be affected.
