PHTY300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Bleeding, Histology, Pulmonary Compliance
Document Summary
In 2007-08 there were 362 new spinal cord injuries [sci]. Epidemiology: age mostly young, 15 - 34 years recently increasing number above 55 years, gender mostly males ratio 4:1. Incidence: approximately 300 new cases of traumatic spinal cord injury (sci) in australia each year, 15 new cases per million population. Incidence has been declining since the earl(cid:455) 80"s due to legislative cha(cid:374)ges - random breath testing and educational programs. Injuries involving the cauda equina are lmn lesions loss of spinal cord mediated reflexes. Injury at the conus can involve both umn and lmn and results in a mixed lesion function. Associated impairments: vertebral damage and instability, respiratory dysfunction, paralysis, paralytic ileus, vte and pe, spasticity, postural hypotension, bladder, bowel & sexual function issues, pressure areas, osteoporosis, heterotopic ossification. Autonomic dysreflexia: uncontrolled parasympathetic response to noxious stimuli (overstretched bowel, bladder, cut, sudden change in temperature)
