PHTY302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Hemianopsia, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, Errorless Learning
Document Summary
One systematic review - craig et al 2011 found 5 variables that could predict the ability to walk (or not) at 30 days after the stroke. They were: age, severity of paresis, type of stroke, size of lesion, presence of hemianopia. One study by veerbeek et al 2011 found that: If patients within 72 hours of stroke could: sit independently, activate muscles in their affected leg. At 6 months they had a 98% chance of independent walking. If patients within 72 hours of stroke could not: sit independently, activate muscles in their affected leg, at 6 months they had a 27% chance of independent walking. The variables that best predicted this were: age, stroke severity (nihss) So - it is the first study to look at what stroke survivors did after their stroke - ie the amount of ll exercise.
