Document Summary

Lumbar spine assessment: classification of low back pain (lbp) 90-95% disc injury l4/5, l52 (main wb levels) Therefore 2 out of 3 lbp patients will have l4/5 or l5/s1 disc. Explain to the patient why their pain is occurring. Somatic referred pain analogy: with heart attack chest pain, arm pain, jaw and neck pain. There isn"t actually pain there, however due to the intensity of the pain coming from the heart, the brain interprets the pain in surrounding structures. Similarly, with the back, draw a spinal cord and point out the back, thigh, leg etc and explain whatever the level of the pain, the signals are sent down via the spinal cord and into the brain. Repeated arom (mckenzie approach) performed when symptoms come on with repeated movements. Crossed slr: pain occurs contralateral side to the ll being raised and this occurs when the disc pathology is central. Level 2: back pain + somatic referred pain.
