Psychology PSYC205 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Color Vision, Retina, Occipital Lobe
Document Summary
Perception is more than photons and pressure. is divided from cognition/emotion but they are often intertwined. follows laws and heuristics. Perception is not just about detecting color or shape. The process of recognizing, organizing, and interpreting information. Hearing: anatomy and function of the ear. Vision: anatomy and function of the eye. To transform physical stimuli in the environment into neural signals in the brain. Example (hearing): sound waves are transformed into vibrations in the ear, and the strength of those vibrations are coded by sensory neurons. Distal (far) object object in the external world (e. g. , a falling tree) When the information from light waves come into contact with the appropriate sensory receptors of the eyes (i. e. , the cells in your retina absorb the light waves). Perceptual object (i. e. , what you see) is created in you that reflects the properties of the external world. Cognition occurs as this information is used to serve further goals.
