Geertz and his wife travelled to bali to conduct anthropological research however they found themselves on the outside of the society, ignored and not accepted by anyone within the community. On one occasion though they found themselves at a cock fight which the police soon raided. Geertz and his wife talked with the police and were able to diffuse the situation. After this encounter the community began to accept geertz and his wife and saw them as one of them. Geertz"s study put forward that cock fighting is an extension of the male persona and ego and that it demonstrates male power and masculinity without appearing animalistic. It is common to see kin groups sparing against other kin groups and kin groups betting within their own kin groups.
