BIOL2142 Lecture 6: Microbial Metabolism
Document Summary
Bacteria survive in amazing environments - pretty much anywhere. Can use a wide variety of different carbon sources. Discover how to avoid deadly black feet and how to brew your own beer. Learn why bacteria come in lots of different colours. Find out how bacteria make cows burp and why it affects us. Learn how bacteria make fertiliser and save fossil fuels. Become rich by building a biocomputer from biological fuel cells or a new battery from mouldy bread. Different types of microbes have evolved different ways of producing energy from different substrates. However: in principle, all cells produce energy in the same way: by generating proton gradients across a membrane and using this to drive atp production. Energy metabolism is very similar between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Aerobatic heterotroph was engulphed and this became the mitochondria. Metabolism is essentially the same because of the endosymbiosis of a bacteria forming the mitochondria.
