MEDN2001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Adrenergic Receptor, Bronchodilator, Cardiac Arrhythmia
Document Summary
Almost all when activated (agonise) increase sympathetic response. Alpha 2 - actually have a reverse effect, so will cause negative feedback. Beta 2 agonists are used in respiratory conditions. Very specific because you inhale it, and it also only targets beta 2 in the lungs. Saturation means that it will start to find beta 1. If de-activating all beta receptors - get bronchoconstriction when they are non-selective. Hence, need to be careful when prescribing to asthmatic patients. Some drugs are specific for beta 1, but lots and lots are mixed. Even though we say selective, the more you give, the less selective they become. If they fill all the beta 1 receptors, will end up going to look for beta 2. When someone is given ventolin (agonist) and propanalol (antagonist) Effects will depend on which drug binds better, affinity, etc. Hold in bicarbonate - increase in serum bicarbonate -> alkalosis. Short acting - lasix (brand name) - lasts 6 hours.
