Maxillary incisors
Functions:
1. Central and lateral maxillary incisors supplement each other in function as
they are anatomically similar
2. Shearing or cutting teeth
3. Cut and tear through food during mastication
4. Larger and wider M-D conical, tapering root
5. Well developed marginal ridges
Central incisor
Evidence of calcification: 3-4 months
Enamel formation: 4-5 years
Eruption: 7-8 years
Root completed: 10 years
Anomalies: short or long root
Functions:
-Cut into food
-Assist tongue in making sounds such as “th”
-Assist lips in making sounds such as “f”
Identifying features:
1. Mesial surface straight and at a sharp right-angle to incisive edge.
2. Disto-incisal angle more rounded
3. Crown large in proportion to root –widest anterior tooth
4. Well-marked marginal ridges on concave palatal surface, with well-
developed cingulum.
5. Crown inclined palatally; root inclined slight distally
6. Smooth, convex labial surface
7. Cervical margin most sinuous on mesial side
8. Single tapering root with rounded triangle cross-section, and one of the
slightly flattened surfaces facing labially
9. Chisel-shaped crown
