DOH114 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Maryland Route 2, Calcification, Mastication
Mandibular molars
- 2 bifurcated roots: M > D
- Incline distally
- Become shorter posteriorly
- Root trunk shorter in firsts
Mandibular first molar
Evidence of Calcification birth
Enamel Completed 2.5-3 years
Eruption 6-7 years
Root completed 9-10 years
Functions:
- Mastication
- Grinding
- Maintain vertical dimension and continuity within dental arches
Identifying features:
- Largest in mandibular arch
- 5 developmental lobes: 4 major cusps and 1 minor cusp, 3 buccal 2
lingual
- ML cusp is highest and widest
- Broad MD
2 roots, 4 pulp horns, 5 cusps, 5 developmental lobes

Drawing
Buccal
1. All cusps seen
2. MB developmental groove separates
MB cusp and DB cusp, then at its
terminal end splits into a buccal groove.
3. DB developmental groove separates
the DB cusp from D cusp
