ENEN2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cleaner Production, Engineers Australia, Boundary Value Problem
L2 TBL
The engineering context of sustainability involves the design and management of sustainable
technology, research into environment and social impacts and limitations.
• Engineers need to develop and implement sustainability – need to investigate the
problem and solve it
Sustainability concepts
• Design – structure, mechanical element, process
• Operation – social consideration, cleaner production strategies
• Maintenance -risk management, cleaner production, good house keeping
• After use stage – recycle, decommissioning
Engineers Australia sustainability policy
1. Use of resource should not exceed limits of generation – Eg : can cut trees but as long
we produce more trees
2. Use of non-renewable should create enduring asset value (fully recyclable) and be
limited to applications where substitution with renewable resources is not practical.
-if non-renewabe is used – make something everlasting/recycable
3. Engineering design should be whole system based with consideration of all impacts.
4. Product and project design should consider longevity, repair, recyclability
5. Eliminating waste (energy -heat/sound) should be primary design consideration.
6. Substance should not do harm to the environment, and be limited to the capacity of the
environment to absorb.
7. Proactive (think about the problem before it happens)
8. Precautionary principle and risk management practices – to ensure irreversible negative
consequences
Why do we need to quantify sustainability?
• Helps organization to report how they are responding to sustainability
• Enables multiple community objectives to be realized – also adds value to the project
• Organizations can monitor and evaluate their actions- helping them to improve their
capacity to respond to sustainability issues
• Compare the performance of products and organizations
• Helps organizations to prepare sustainability reports for making it available to public
Environment, social, ecomonic – need to consider all 3 of these factors
-companies are required to focus on the TBL
-TBl dimensions are the 3 Ps; people planet and profits
The economic bottom line – variables that deal with the bottom line and the flow of money.
-personal income, cost of underemployment, establishment chum, job growth
The environmental bottom line – measurements of natural resources – it can incorporate air
and water quality, energy consumption, natural resources, solid and toxic waste and land
uses/cover.
-concentration of nitrogen oxides, sulphur, excessive nutrients, electricity consumptions
The social bottom line – measurements of education, access to social resources, health and
well-being

Document Summary
The engineering context of sustainability involves the design and management of sustainable technology, research into environment and social impacts and limitations: engineers need to develop and implement sustainability need to investigate the problem and solve it. Sustainability concepts: design structure, mechanical element, process, operation social consideration, cleaner production strategies, maintenance -risk management, cleaner production, good house keeping, after use stage recycle, decommissioning. Environment, social, ecomonic need to consider all 3 of these factors. Companies are required to focus on the tbl. Tbl dimensions are the 3 ps; people planet and profits. The economic bottom line variables that deal with the bottom line and the flow of money. Personal income, cost of underemployment, establishment chum, job growth. The environmental bottom line measurements of natural resources it can incorporate air and water quality, energy consumption, natural resources, solid and toxic waste and land uses/cover. Concentration of nitrogen oxides, sulphur, excessive nutrients, electricity consumptions.
