HUMB1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Lymphadenopathy, Sepsis, Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis –Inflammation of the tonsils –bacterial infection.
Lymphoma –cancer (benign or malignant) of the lymphoid tissue or cells,
often begins in the lymph nodes, immune system suppressed.
Hodgkin’s disease – Malignancy in lymphoid tissue (malignant B cells).
Chemotherapy /radiation.
Non-hodgkins lymphoma –any cancer of lymphoid tissue –except
Hodgkins’s. Can effect cells, nodes or organs. Young vs Old.
Bubonic plague (The Black death) –severe bacterial infection (fleas/rats),
enlarged lymph nodes, septicemia.

An antigen is any substance that stimulates a specific immune response to
produce specific antibodies.
Antigens are large molecules.
Large surface molecules
•
Whole bacterial cell or virus
•
Part of a pathogen
•
Toxin
•
Foreign tissue transplanted from another person.
•
Type of antigens include:
Self-antigen: any large molecule produced in a person's own body that doesn't cause an immune
response in that person.
Non-self antigen any compound foreign to the body that triggers and immune response.

Document Summary
Tonsillitis inflammation of the tonsils bacterial infection. Lymphoma cancer (benign or malignant) of the lymphoid tissue or cells, often begins in the lymph nodes, immune system suppressed. Hodgkin"s disease malignancy in lymphoid tissue (malignant b cells). Non-hodgkins lymphoma any cancer of lymphoid tissue except. Ca(cid:374) effe(cid:272)t (cid:272)ells, (cid:374)odes or orga(cid:374)s. you(cid:374)g (cid:448)s old. Bubonic plague (the black death) severe bacterial infection (fleas/rats), enlarged lymph nodes, septicemia. An antigen is any substance that stimulates a specific immune response to produce specific antibodies. Self-antigen: any large molecule produced in a person"s own body that doesn"t cause an immune response in that person. Non-self antigen any compound foreign to the body that triggers and immune response. Ability to resist damage from foreign substances and internal threats. Innate and adaptive immunity are fully integrated in the body. Each time body is exposed to a substance, response is the same (i. e. has no memory) Cause vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, attract white blood cells, stimulate phagocytosis.
