LEARNING OUTCOMES
1.1 Why should I study information systems?
1.2 What is a computer-based information system?
1.3 How does IT impact organisations?
1.4 Why are information systems important to society?
What is an information system?
- IS conceptualised as a triangle (CONTEXT, CARRIER, MESSAGE)
o Context people/organisation
o Carrier language, IT/ICT
o Message data/process
o Type of data/process will have an impact on the carrier
- Any organised system for the collection, organisation, storage and communication of
information
- Study of complementary networks that people and organisation use to collect filter
process create and distribute data
1.1 Why should I study information systems?
To become an informed user
- ICT so deeply embedded in life that daily routines unrecognisable to a uni student 20
years ago
- Need to become an informed user: a person knowledgeable about info system and
info tech
- Informed users
o Get more value from whatever technologies they use
o Benefit more from organisations ICT applications because they have higher
apait to uderstad hat is ehid apps
o Able to enhance quality of organisations ICT apps with input
o Able to review, recommend, and help select the ICT apps their organisations
will use
o Able to keep abreast of both new IT/ICTs and rapid developments in existing
IT/ICTs
1.2 Computer-based information systems
- A computer based information system (CBIS) uses computer tech to perform some
or all tasks
- Term IS used synonymously with CBIS
Basic components of CBIS
Hardware
Device such as processor, monitor, keyboard, or printer. Together devices accept data and
information, process them and display them.

Software
A program or collection of programs that enable the hardware to process data
Database
Collection of related files or tables containing data
Network
Connecting system (wireline or wireless) that permits different computers to share
resources
Procedures
Set of instructions about how to combine hardware, software, databases and networks in
order to process information and generate the desired output
Users
Individuals who use the hardware and software, interface with it, or utilise its output
Integration of IT components
Information Technology (IT) platform
Formed with components of hardware, software, networks (wired and wireless) and
databases
IT Services
Personnel who use components to develop IS, oversee security and risk, and manage data
IT infrastructure
IT components plus IT services
Applications
A computer program designed to support a specific task or business process. Each
functional area or department within a business uses dozens of applications. The collection
of application programs in a single department is usually referred to as a departmental IS or
functional area information system.
Types of computer-based IS
SUPPORT ENTIRE ORGANISATION
Functional area information systems (FAIS)
- Supports a particular functional area within the organisation
Finance and accounting
IT systems used to forecast revenues and business activity, to determine best sources and
use of funds, and to perform audits to ensure organisation is fundamentally sound and that
all financial reports and documents are accurate:
- Product analysis: developing new goods and services
- Site analysis: determining best location for production and distribution facilities
- Promotion analysis: identifying the best advertising channels
- Price analysis: setting product prices to obtain the highest total revenue
Manufacturing
Managers use IT to process customer orders, develop production schedules, control
inventory levels and monitor product quality. They also use IT to design and
manufacture products. These processes called computer-assisted design (CAD) and
