Document Summary

Overtime the way humanity understands health and illness has changed dramatically. At one point in time illness was believed to be a result of supernatural forces. Many believed that those who were sick had sinned and were been punished by god, therefore the ill were handled by religious leaders. China: they believed illness to be a result of supernatural forces and their medical care involved things such as drugs and acupuncture. Greece: compared to the rest of the world greece was quite developed in terms of their medical thought and practice. Their medical practices entered the realm of science. An example of this been the roman army been placed into hospital-like structures when they become ill or wounded. Since many of those who were sick were thought to be sinners, caring for the ill was viewed as a path to heaven and became a responsibility of nuns.
