HNN112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Orthopedic Surgery, Plaster Cast, Back Injury
HNN112 WEEK 12 Seminar Note
Case study 1
Jeremy Jamison is a 28 year old man who was involved in a motor bike accident 24 hours
ago. He has both legs in full length plaster casts as he has fractured his left ankle and right
tibia.
His left arm is in a collar and cuff sling as he has also fractured his humerus. Jeremy has an
IV line in his right arm as he still requires intravenous antibiotics.
At handover you are told that Jeremy is to rest in bed until he has been reviewed by the
orthopaedic surgeon. You are also told he has not had a good wash since his admission as
he has been reluctant to accept assistance with his hygiene needs.
When you introduce yourself to Jeremy, you note that his hair is spotted with remnants of
gravel and his lips are crusted with dry saliva. He is wearing a crumpled hospital gown and
you detect a distinct odour that supports the information that you have been given in
handover.
Whe ou ask Jere ho he is feelig he tells ou that he is feelig er tired.
