HNN 120 Week 9 Seminar Note
Decision Making
What: have I learned about ethical decision making in nursing?
Yes. This week’s content is about the key principles and components when nurses
need to make ethical decisions.
Four key principles supporting ethical decision making?
a. Autonomy(self-governing decision),
b. Non-maleficence (no harm to the pt.),
c. justice(treat everyone equally),
d. Beneficence (provide benefit to the pt.)
So what: impact will this have on my nursing practice?
According to code of ethics for nurses, nurses should be consistent with the
following components.
As a result, in my future career, I will take more factors like nursing code of conduct,
legal requirement and pt. personal values into considerations when making ethical
decisions.
Now what: further information do I need about ethics in nursing practice?
a. Code of Ethics for Nurses – NMBA produced by the Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Australia
b. Bioethics: A Nursing Perspective p35-47, providing useful definitions
around the ethical principles
c. More experience from the senior nurses
d. Resources/papers/good practice based on evidence

admitted with Febrile Neutropenia. You ask your preceptor what this is, and she explains
that as a result of chemotherapy, Joshua’s immune system is severely depressed and he
has developed an infection. You go in to assess Joshua and he states that he is feeling
“awful”. He is shivering, pale and appears short of breath. You take a set of vital signs
