Developmental psychology examines changes in physiology, cognition (thinking) and social behaviour over the lifespan. Time-ordered sequence that is: orderly, cumulative, predictable. Prenatal development progresses through three stages: zygote/germinal stage (conception-2 weeks, embryonic stage (in the womb, cell differentiation, crucial part 2-9 weeks, foetal stage (formed major organs) Teratogens: external complication to pregnancy- environmental factor negative influence on foetus. The time the foetus is exposed can lead to what type of abnormalities. Before 2 weeks can lead to prenatal death. Functional defects and minor abnormalities- 8 weeks till birth. This is adaptive because socialisation tastes and smell (16 weeks) Vision (2-3 months old, preference for faces) Hearing (watch a show during pregnancy have a preference later on) reflexes: crawl, grasp reflex, tonic neck reflexes, step reflex environmental influences on brain.
