CCA1108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Intergalactic Computer Network, Satellite Internet Access, Internet Backbone
The internet:
TC/IP= Data transmission protocol
breaks internet data down into packets. Each packet contains data and address it is being
sent to. Keeps records of original data for rearranging.
Routers= computers routing packets to destinations through channels.
Bandwidth= Communications channels carrying data on the internet backbone. It is a
channels data carrying capacity measured at info passed/sec.
internet channels:
phone lines
coaxial cables
fibre optics
microwave
satellite
internet addresses:
IP= internet protocol
every computer has a unique IP address. It is made up on 4 BYTES separated by full stops.
“A network of networks that share agreement.”
DNS = domain name system.
serves as the phonebook as it sorts various information out.
Web Hosting:
FTP= file transfer protocol
used for uploading files to a server space.
FTP apps = transmit.
Peering- exchanging participant’s system.
Licklider – came up with the idea for an intergalactic computer network in 1962
