STARTING OUT- WHAT“ IT ABOUT?
• The key to creation is to create, then evaluate, improve and complete, and not by
waylaid by fear and uncertainty. The best writers know this, and rewrite after
rewrite until the characters, plot and theme come together to effectively tell the
story.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD SHORT FILM
• A good short film needs to e foused ad speifi. It doest hae tie to e
leisurely and explore more than one topic.
• A idea should e fresh. “oethig e haet see efore.
• Characters should engage the audience through emotion.
• There should be a few surprises along the way that tell us something.
SIMPLICITY:
• The best ideas for short films are usually relatively simple.
• They focus on ONE main incident.
• The main story is effective when it establishes or hints its conflict early and sticks
with it.
INTERESTING CHARACTERS:
• Sometimes the nature of the conflict the character faces is enough tension to
stimulate our interest.
• Often in short films its character behaviour that it most interesting, how the
character responds to conflict and what actions they take. The consequences they
face will define them.
• You need to find ways to demonstrate those qualities or traits in action.
CONFLICT:
• Good story ideas or short films contain more than just the seeds of conflict; they
expose a situation where conflict already exists.
• The best characters are the ones who commit to try and accomplish something.
• Conflict for a short film can be subtle or definite.
EMOTION:
