Document Summary

The children read familiar or easy level books that they can read without assistance. The children are supported independently read a text at their instructional level. The children play games or do activities that consolidate their learning of taught concepts and strategies. Free up the teacher to carry out gr instruction with small groups while the remaining students engage in meaningful literacy learning away from the teacher. Provide opportunities for students to practise, consolidate and extend the strategies and skills learned during shared and gr, not to introduce new learning. Students are able to work successfully as independent learners if the learning centre tasks are developmentally appropriate and if clear expectations are set. Learning centres provide opportunities for the students to extend and consolidate their literacy understandings. The activities conducted in these groups allow children to practice and improve their fluency, comprehension, problem solving and co-operation skills, as well as the ability to work independently from the teacher.
