Skeletal structure to bones and cells: necessary for enzymatic reactions, minerals needed in ruminant nutrition, macrominerals (ca, p, mg, k, s, na, and cl, microminerals (cu, co, zn, se, fe, mn, mo, i) Phosphorus: bone and teeth formation, energy metabolism, part of dna and rna, deficiency. Low intake in young cattle -> low concentrates: fragile bones, poor growth and reproduction, depraved appetite, stiff joints in calves. Seen in calves 2-4 weeks: bacterial infection of the joints, calves reluctant to move, high temp, fluid swellings in the hocks and knees, difficult to treat once recumbent, prevention: dress navel at birth, colostrum, silent heat, excessive. Tv1002: bone reabsorption, urinary calculi due to metabolic problems, reproduction is adversely affected. Found in skeletal tissue and bone: depressed fibre digestibility.
