TV 1002:06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Proventriculus, Esophagus, Ruminant
Document Summary
Digestion: large complex nutrients are broken down into simpler molecules capable of being used by the organism for food. Stomach: simple: digestion: enzymatic, humans, swine, dogs, chickens. Small intestine: enzymatic digestion and absorption, digestion of protein, carbohydrates, and fats trypsin, chymotrypsin, carboxypeptides, lipases (lipids), amylases (carbohydrates, absorption of the end products of digestion. Amylase breaks down carbohydrates in the pancreas (alpha-1-4-glycoside linkages --> c-h-o to produce atp) Large intestine: bacterial activity, water absorption, waste storage. Cloaca: common chamber for gi and urinary tracts. Vent: common exit for gi and urinary tracts. Sheep: cattle, goats, complex, 4-compartmented stomach, reticulum, rumen, omasum (book, manyplies, abomasum. Rumination: regurgitation, rechewing and reswallowing of ingested food. Process of rumination: regurgitate bolus from rumen, re-chew and re-insalivate, re-swallow. Mouth: contains dental pad, teeth, tongue, saliva. Oesophagus: tube from mouth to stomach, tube from stomach to mouth.
