Document Summary

Dtn102 food commodities and classifications part 1. According to the dictionary: commodity noun: commodity; plural noun: commodities. Is a raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought and sold, such as copper or coffee: or a useful or valuable thing, "water is a precious commodity". Food is produced by farmers everywhere in the world, but it is mostly bought and sold, plus imported and exported, as commodities by larger companies that trade globally. Commodities as staple foods: you may have noticed that some of the major food commodities are what we call staple foods or crops. For example, they may be tolerant of drought, pests or soils low in nutrients. Just 15 crop plants provide 90 percent of the world"s food energy intake, with three rice, maize and wheat - making up two-thirds of this. Per capita rice consumption has generally remained stable, or risen slightly since the 1960s.
