BIOL108 Lecture 27: Evolution

43 views1 pages

Document Summary

Animals change over time due to evolution and animals needing to adapt to the environment. Darwin did not conceive the theory of evolution in the modern sense (lamarck"s idea) Darwin assembled large amounts of data about natural history to support evolutionary theory. Genes described by mendel are composed of dna. Variations in characteristics noted by darwin are caused by differences in dna sequences. Comparisons between dna sequences show that evolution occurs enables us to estimate how long it takes: natural selection: The survival of variants within a population because they are better adapted to current conditions. Natural selection underlies many recent and ongoing biological changes such as resistance of bacteria to antibiotics, the resistance of insects to pesticides and of rodents to rodenticides.
