Problems with communication, understanding, speaking and writing. Adults as a result of brain damage/head injury/surgery/illness. Just language skills are impaired, intellect is not impaired just unable to communicate. A disorder of language acquired as a result of brain damage. There may be difficulties with: speaking, writing, understanding speech, understanding written text (reading for meaning), reading aloud, repeating what is said, gesturing. Different degrees of difficulty and different combinations of problems. Nearly everybody has a problem with finding the words they to say (anomia) They are not stupid just because they cant speech. Planning and coordinating the muscle movements (apraxia of speech) Damage to areas of the brain that control language. Typically the tempo parietal region of the left hemisphere. Most people with aphasia have it as a result of stroke (cerebro-vascular accident) Blockage or haemorrhage of a blood vessel. Brain tumours ( and surgery to remove tumours) Aphasia can occur in progressive brain disease (dementias)
