The purpose of a database it to organise and keep track of things. Spreadsheets can do this too but only keep lists of single concepts. Databases have more flexibility and are multipurpose, have multiple themes/concepts. A database is a self-describing collection of integrated records. Values relate to other rows/records in other tables. Key : often called primary key, each table has a key, a column or group of columns that identifies a unique row in table. Foreign key : fields other than primary key that connect to another table or field. Data is self-describing contains descriptions of its data. Make databases more useful and easier to use (in long run) A dbms is a program used to create, process and administer a database. Microsoft access dbms"s are usually licensed. Dbms is a software program, database is the metadata and relationships and tables. Major function of a dbms is to process data in the database.
