Origins of the current system
- Passed as part of an Act of the British Parliament in 1900: The Commonwealth of
Australia Constitution Act 1900 (Imp) cl 9.
- In-force 1 January 1901.
- Federation of Australia formed: six separate British self-governing colonies became
the Commonwealth of Australia: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania,
South Australia and Western Australia.
