Main aim of the course: we are in an age of ecological crisis and we have looked at a few ecological issues that are likely to define the 21st. Science, society, and the natural environment are separate entities. This unit focuses on the relationship of these entities and the conflicts between them. The idea of a great chain of being which is implanted within the idea of a clockwork universe. Our current ecological predicament can be traced back to cultural and symbolic developments with our relationship with nature. The nature of ecological knowledge and the possibility of a collaboration between these two knowledge systems. From these lectures, these are the areas to focus on: Natural and cultural knowledge embedded in oral traditions. Not geared towards growth but able to sustain their population. Lecture 1: the anthropocene & the continuum of environmental values. Lecture 2: industrial society and the limits to. Lecture 3: modern and pre-modern worldviews; the rise of science.
