Social Development
What is social development?
o Refers to the changes in the way an individual relates to others and develops
the skills needed for participating in the social context e.g. parents relating to
children with homework, friendship (acquiring skills of intimacy, share and
trust information)
o Social development also can refer to skills needed in a social context
o Social development is closely associated with socialization
o Socialisation = when members of society influence the beliefs and
behaviours of children, which enables them to adopt the culture, norms
and values of that society
Little rules that are highly context specific e.g. sitting quietly in
a lecture we have been socialized to know this or not looking
at people’s faces when in a lift
Social development contains key developmental contexts:
o Such as relationships with family, friends, romantic partner in each
of these contexts, we learn new skills and behaviours that we can pass
on and develop from
Social development is also important as it links to other developmental processes:
o Moral and cognitive development have links to social development
o E.g. social development difficulty can affect cognitive and moral roles
Social development is an integral part of human development:
o If not, can link to mental health issues or low self-esteem issues and
isolation
o Ability of socialism is fundamental to human experience (and animals)
Social development is also an integral part of school/academic development:
o Can assist in greater academic and intellectual wellbeing
o Bullying and mental health issues can link to poor academia
The Developing Social Being:
o Infancy = attachment to a primary caregiver
o The close immediate bond usually with mother or father/grandparents,
we trust and feel comfortable with them
o Attachment is the first ability people have to feel loved, warm and
secure presence of a human is essential for our wellbeing during
infancy
o Children who have dysfunctional attachment show a failure to thrive
they do not develop at the same pace as others (head and brain size is
smaller, body reflects lack of thriving and growth, temperamental and
emotional problems etc.)
o Infancy and attachment is the building block for us when experiencing
and express emotions
o Early childhood = family bonds and play associates
o Understanding of siblings, extended family and important people in
our lives
o Basic social skills such as sharing and turn-taking playing is
essential these social skills underpin our ability to get along with
each other
