Document Summary
Part 1: measuring and communicating student performance and principles of effective practice. Assessment for learning is an effective way of using assessment data to improve learning and teaching. Applying the principles of quality teaching to assessment. How do we assess: formal/informal, formative, summative. We can compare student performance against an established criterion, or against the performance of other students, or against a set of standards. The process of giving meaning to scores by referencing them to the cohort or normative group is called norm or cohort referencing. It is effectively a way of comparing students. The iq test and atar is the best known example of norm-referenced assessment. School reports place in class and rank in year. Important to know who the cohort is (e. g. atar standards in 2000s does not match atar standards in 2005) Need to know what measure or criteria you use to come up with the ranking.
