No opposition of the foot
•
Abductor hallucis brevis: on outer end of big toe - abduction of big toe
•
Flexor digitorum brevis: tendons split when inserting on middle phalanges (FDL passes
through)
•
Abductor digiti minimi: on outer border of little toe - abduction of little toe
•
All originate from plantar side of calcaneus
•
AbHB, FDB –Medial Plantar N.
○
AbDM –Lateral Plantar N.
○
(Medial Plantar Nerve supplies
Abductor ‘hal’ ‘neath which it lies,
Flexor brevis, both ‘dig’ and ‘hal’;
And, last of all, first lumbrical)
NS:
•
Sole: Layer 1. (beneath plantar aponeurosis)

Straightens the oblique pull of FDL
○
NS: Lateral plantar N.
○
Quadratus plantae (‘Flexor accessorius’)(FDL and FHL tendons): from calcaneus, inserts on
lateral border of FDL tendon
•
Flex metatarsophalangeal joints and extend IP joints
○
NS: Lumbrical 1 –Medial Plantar N., Lumbricals 2-4 –Lateral Plantar N.
○
Lumbricals (4): originate from tendons of FDL, insert on extensor expansions

Document Summary
Abductor hallucis brevis: on outer end of big toe - abduction of big toe. Flexor digitorum brevis: tendons split when inserting on middle phalanges (fdl passes through) Abductor digiti minimi: on outer border of little toe - abduction of little toe. Abdm lateral plantar n. Lumbricals (4): originate from tendons of fdl, insert on extensor expansions. Ns: lumbrical 1 medial plantar n. , lumbricals 2-4 lateral plantar n. Flexor hallucis brevis: from cuboid+lateral cuneiform, inserts on both sides of base of proximal phalanx of hallux. Works with the fhl in flexing the big toe. Flexor digiti minimi: from base of 5th metatarsal to base of proximal phalanx of little toe.
