ANAT30007 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Human Fat, Alpaca, Fat Pad
Document Summary
Lecture 11. 2 guest lecture comparative foot biomechanics. Fat pad under the heel: absorb the stresses, attenuate b/w 50-90% of heel strike impact before the time it reaches the knee, human fat pad is quite reduced in size. Most humans when walking hit the ground with mid-foot (because of shoes) In societies without shoes, the heel is extremely enlarged. Need to facilitate movement on varied terrains. Front part of foot (right side) back part (left) Massive fat pad (digital cushion) dominates the central and caudal part of the foot. Skeletal posture has it so that only toes are in contact with the ground: looks like tip toes. False toes embed in the fat pads and transmit load from sole of foot up to limbs. Evolutionary link b/w body mass and size of fat pad: When kept in captivity: osteoarthritis develops (image on right) elephant can"t walk anymore.
