Scientific study of the structural, functional and biochemical changes in molecules, cells, tissues and organ which underlies disease. Condition in which the presence of abnormality causes loss of normal structure and function and consequently affects health. Microbiological and immunological investigation - bacteria, viruses, immune system both protecting from & causing disease. General pathology: study of disease processes (e. g. cell death, inflammation) which occur in all body systems (our focus) - not organ specific. Systemic pathology: study of disease/s found within an organ system. Cause - understanding of pathology is intrinsic to the practice of medicine.
