BIOM20001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 57: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cirrhosis, Hemoglobin
Document Summary
Disease is the foundation of medical practice study of suffering. Scientific study of the structural, functional and biochemical changes in molecules, cells, tissues and organ which underlies disease. Condition in which the presence of abnormality causes loss of normal structure and function and consequently affects health. "injury to the smallest living unit of the body, the cell, is the basis of all disease" Macro/microscopic investigation - tissue damage at organ level & cellular level. Microbiological and immunological investigation - bacteria, viruses, immune system both protecting from & causing disease. Understand (observe patient, manipulate cell culture of disease, investigate pathogenesis) -> diagnose -> treat/prevent. General pathology: study of disease processes (e. g. cell death, inflammation) which occur in all body systems (our focus) - not organ specific. Systemic pathology: study of disease/s found within an organ system. Cause - understanding of pathology is intrinsic to the practice of medicine. Molecular and morphologic changes to cells or tissues - what we see.
